AAO committees with significant impact on the member experience are seeking candidates to become members starting April 27, 2025 (at the close of the second meeting of the House of Delegates). Committee positions are knowledge or interest-based (not constituent representatives). All applicants must be active AAO members.

  • Committee on Conferences and Meetings (CCon): Designs conference schedules including the addition or elimination of special events, develops educational content and proposes locations for AAO Annual Session, Winter Conference and other events.
  • Committee on Technology (CTECH): Develops, implements and administers initiatives such as AAO TechSelect, the annual Ortho Innovator Award and other technology projects impacting the AAO and its relationships with stakeholders.
  • Special Committee on Inclusion and Engagement (SCIE): Works to support and inspire diverse groups within the AAO by helping develop tools and pathways to leadership, identifying obstacles for involvement in the AAO and making recommendations for change.  
  • Special Committee on Women Orthodontists (SCWO): Works to support and inspire women orthodontists by helping develop tools and pathways to leadership, identifying issues that face women orthodontists and making recommendations to improve the value of membership.

SELECTION PROCESS SCHEDULE
Key dates for the committees’ selection processes include:

  • Applications accepted through November 30, 2024
  • Committees meet to review applications: December 2024-January 2025
  • Committees submit recommendations of selected candidates to the AAO Board of Trustees: February 2024
  • Welcome letter sent to new members: late February 2025
  • Committee terms begin: April 27, 2024 (close of the second session of the AAO House of Delegates)

OVERVIEW: COMMITTEE ON CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS (CCon)
Term length: four years, renewable once 
First term begins: April 27, 2025 (close of the second session of the AAO House of Delegates) 

Building on the history and culture of the association, the work of CCon ensures that the Mission and Vision of the AAO is served through the production of its meetings and conferences, and that each meeting/conference employs the AAO core values. CCon is limited to 12 members, with a term of service limited to two 4-year terms, unless otherwise determined by CCon members.

CCon has been granted the authority to: 

  • Design conference schedules including the addition or elimination of special events. 
  • Propose meeting locations, patterns, and budgets for final approval by the Board of Trustees. 
  • Select conference speakers and curricula that match the educational goals of the AAO.

OVERVIEW: COMMITTEE ON TECHNOLOGY (CTECH) 
Term length:
four years, renewable once for an additional two years 
First term begins: April 27, 2025 (close of the second session of the AAO House of Delegates) 

CTECH’s primary duty is to develop and provide objective resources to educate members about technologies used in orthodontics that enhance patient care and/or improve operational efficiencies to support adoption of proven technologies. 

Desired qualifications for CTECH members include: 

  • Expertise in using orthodontic technologies including, but not limited to 3D printing, in-house fabrication of aligners, digital indirect bonding, custom bracket systems, remote treatment monitoring and/or direct print aligners. 
  • A love for learning about and experimenting with new technologies 

CTECH meets as a committee two times per year. An in-person meeting in St. Louis is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2025 with dinner the night before. The second meeting will take place via Zoom late January/early February 2026. Subcommittee work will take place between these meetings with as-needed virtual meetings. 

OVERVIEW: SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON INCLUSION AND ENGAGEMENT (SCIE)
Term length: two years, renewable twice 
First term begins: April 27, 2025 (close of the second session of the AAO House of Delegates) 

Originally formed as a task force in 2020, SCIE has played a critical role in bringing a variety of initiatives to life, including hosting an in-person event at the Annual Session, virtual happy hours to provide a platform for members to discuss the culture of AAO, and developing recommended implicit bias trainings for AAO leaders and members. Other exciting initiatives are currently underway.

SCIE works to support and inspire diverse groups within the AAO by helping develop tools and pathways to leadership.

OVERVIEW: SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON WOMEN ORTHODONTISTS (SCWO)
Term length: two years, renewable twice 
First term begins: April 27, 2025 (close of the second session of the AAO House of Delegates) 

Building on the history and culture of the association, the work of SCWO ensures that the interests of women orthodontists are addressed through providing resources, networking, and leadership training and pathways. 

SCWO includes 8 members. Each member serves a two-year term with an option for renewal for up to three terms total.
