If you are uncertain of the difference between the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics (CDABO), here is a breakdown of the groups’ primary responsibilities:

● The ABO provides testing for Board certification and grants certification to successful candidates;
● CDABO takes an active role in supporting orthodontic professional development and advocating for Board certification.

CDABO membership is open to any Board-certified orthodontist (holding Diplomate status with the ABO). CDABO provides opportunities for learning and social interaction for its members and for orthodontists preparing for Board exams, as explained below and in the video “Getting to Know CDABO: A Conversation with Dr. Jane Wright” (of the CDABO Council).

Founded in 1979, CDABO provides a variety of opportunities for learning and social interaction, including:
● An annual CE meeting for members and non-members;
● A brochure that explains the meaning of Diplomate status and Board certification to patients and parents;
● Events for Diplomates at the AAO Annual Session and informational sessions about Board certification;
● A Prep Course for those preparing for the ABO’s new Scenario-based Oral Clinical Examination for orthodontists pursuing board certification;
Re-certification courses to aid to assist Diplomates preparing for the BCE exam required every 10 years to maintain certification from the ABO.

CDABO shares news with members via the Diplomate newsletter.
