Responsibly Advancing Diagnosis & Treatment Planning Capabilities With AI

Use of AI in orthodontics must support—not replace—licensed orthodontic judgment. These systems should function as clinical co-pilots, assisting in diagnosis and treatment planning, but must never operate independently in ways that bypass the expertise of a trained provider.

Currently, image analysis is one of the leading areas for AI and Machine Learning (ML) utilization throughout healthcare including orthodontics and is being used in the following ways:

AI enabled treatment planning products have the potential to enhance precision treatment planning by customizing and refining treatment strategies based on patient-specific data and doctor preferences.

These technologies leverage predictive analytics, automated cephalometric analysis, and AI-driven treatment simulations to support clinical decision-making while maintaining the orthodontist’s independent medical judgment to ensure safety, efficacy, and individualized care.

AI in orthodontic patient care remains in its early stages of evolution. While currently available models show promise in streamlining workflows and potentially reducing treatment time, they are not a substitute for clinical expertise.
