If you are interested in purchasing a 3D printer, or if you already have one and are now implementing a digital lab – you won’t want to miss a new panel presentation video from the Resource Center on AAO TechSelect.* Facilitated by Dr. Christian Groth, the panel includes Drs. Lisa Alvetro, Ken Webb, Jason Cope and Matt Larson, who discuss their experiences with 3D printing and in-house lab set-up.

View the panel discussion video to learn about topics like organizing scans and production processes, sterilization in the in-house lab, and determining whether to produce a model in-house or outsource it to a lab. Key takeaways from the discussion include:

● An in-house lab is a big change for a team. Getting staff involved and supportive of the initiative may be challenging.  Make the process doctor-driven and let it evolve gradually, starting with simple steps and spreading duties among staff members.

● Clinical knowledge is very helpful for this process. Other skill sets to consider as you evaluate staff members for particular tasks include talent for spearheading processes, software knowledge and a technical mindset. Being a visionary is also useful.

● When evaluating printers, look at the capacity that you need now and what you expect to need in the future.

* A new AAO member resource, TechSelect provides over 40 videos and guides. Evaluate and compare 3D printers and other needed equipment and lock in best prices from trusted partner companies. Use the interactive tool to calculate the number of cases needed to recover the investment of setting up an in-house lab.
