Orthodontic Residency Program Presentations
The AAO is pleased to offer a series of informational and educational programs to orthodontic residents at their residency programs. Presentations are provided to ADA/CDA-accredited orthodontic programs at no cost. View the descriptions below to learn more about the programs currently offered.

Resident Vitals
The Resident Vitals presentation emphasizes AAO member resources and services which are vital to residents during their orthodontic training and beyond. Residents will learn how to maximize the effectiveness of their AAO memberships by utilizing the wide array of benefits available to them. Moreover, they will learn about the association’s support of new graduates as they transition to practice and how that support continues throughout their careers.
Setting: in-person preferred (virtual also available)
Suggested time allotment: 60 minutes
Presented by: AAO will provide a designated presenter
A/V needs: computer and projector to run a PowerPoint presentation; microphone if presented in a lecture room or auditorium; Internet connection if choosing virtual (Zoom) option
Meal: a light meal may be provided and reimbursed by the AAO
Financial Management for Residents
This program is designed for orthodontic residents as they consider their financial futures and orthodontic careers. The presentation introduces concepts to help residents make sound financial decisions in practice and life, which many AAO members report they do not receive during or prior to their orthodontic training. Topics covered include:
- Establishing a Financial Game Plan
- Managing Student Loan Debt
- Financial Decisions for Practice Ownership
- Effectively Managing Risks to Your Financial Well-Being
- Preparing for Retirement

Suggested time allotment: 90 minutes
Presented by: program may select a presenter or request for the AAO to arrange a presenter (local member volunteer); videos and discussion prompts are provided by the AAO

Resident Legal Course
The Resident Legal Course is presented by licensed attorneys who work for the AAO. Each year, the AAO’s legal department presents dozens of these courses to residents throughout the U.S. and Canada who specifically invite the AAO to present the course at their programs. The course covers a multitude of topics such as handling difficult patients, dealing with divorce parents and how to respond to a negative online review.

Suggested time allotment: 3 hours (in-person) or 2 hours (virtual)

AAO-Endorsed Insurance Program: An Exclusive AAO Member Benefit
AAO leverages the collective buying power of the thousands of its thousands of members to provide insurance coverages custom-designed for orthodontists at AAO member-only rates. The program offers complimentary student coverages, life, disability and professional liability insurance, as well as coverages for orthodontic practice owners. In this presentation, residents will learn about the program’s no cost life and disability insurance and how to convert these coverages upon graduation.
