February is Children’s Dental Health Month and AAO members who are doing community presentations can choose from a variety of AAO consumer education materials such as “Age 7” print ads and posters that emphasize the importance of an orthodontic evaluation no later than age 7.

In addition, the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, which the AAO co-sponsors with more than 35 other dental organizations, offers tools that encourage kids to brush such as Toothsavers, a new mobile app featuring an interactive game.

AAO Resources

AAO ads and other print materials are useful “leave behinds” for speaking engagements.  Six of the 12 print ads are offered in easy-to-customize Word files in addition to high-resolution PDFs.

Three AAO topical fliers are also good leave-behinds for community presentations. They include: “Problems to Watch for in Growing Children,” (also available in Spanish); “Dental Trauma: Prevent Accidents but Know What to Do if they Occur”; and “What is an Orthodontist?”

The AAO “Your Smile” PowerPoint presentation, available with slides and a prepared script in both English and Spanish, is also a useful community program tool.

Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives Resources

The AAO is one of more than 35 dental organizations that are members of the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, which debuted the Kids’ Healthy Mouths public service campaign in 2012 with the Ad Council. The program aims to educate parents and reduce children’s risk of oral disease by motivating them to brush their teeth for two minutes, twice a day.

The partnership’s new, free mobile gaming app, Toothsavers, is an interactive game designed to make tooth brushing fun by encouraging kids to save friendly fairy tale characters from the cavity-creating sorceress who cast a tooth-rotting spell on the kingdom. The game includes 10 colorful characters with their own toothbrushes and food particles to brush, with stars awarded for brushing each character’s teeth well.

Additional Healthy Mouths, Health Lives materials were developed in conjunction with Scholastic for kids in pre-school through first grade. These materials were designed for teachers, but may also be used by doctors during classroom presentations.
