Treatment Methods, Stability Issues to Receive In-Depth Attention
Among the speakers presenting intelligence from recent research on issues involved with open bite will be:
Dr. Bella Shen Garnett. Dr. Garnett’s lecture will address the capabilities and limitations of clear aligners for vertical control. She will also provide an overview of stability and mechanics used to close open bites and compare the effectiveness of clear aligners to fixed appliances for closing open bite.
In private practice in San Francisco and treating 50 percent adults, Dr. Garnett has taught Invisalign at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and is a Diamond Plus provider and lectures for Align, Propel Orthodontics and Orthopulse.
Dr. James K. Hartsfield. Dr. Hartsfield will discuss the development of the vertical dimension in human faces in relation to the etiology of open bite. He will also address the impact of airway variation and muscle activity on the vertical dimension, how these factors should inform treatment planning and treatment, and their impact on retention of the open bite closure.
Dr. Hartsfield is the E. Preston Hicks Endowed Professor of Craniofacial Genetics, Orthodontics and Oral Health Research at the University of Kentucky,
Dr. Lorenzo Franchi. Dr. Franchi’s lecture will cover the dentoskeletal effects produced by different types of appliances for the treatment of open bite in the mixed dentition (quad helix with crib, open bite Bionator, removable plate with crib, rapid maxillary expansion and vertical pull chin cup). Dr. Franchi will also address the effects produced by rapid maxillary expansion in prepubertal open bite patients and long-term stability of open bite treatment.
Associate Professor and Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Florence, Italy, Dr. Franchi is also the Thomas M. Graber Visiting Scholar in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Stavros Kiliaridis. Dr. Kiliaridis will discuss anterior open bite from the perspective of disharmony between vertical facial growth and the continuous eruption of the posterior teeth, in respect to the continuous eruption of the anterior teeth. He will present findings based on clinical and animal studies indicating the influence of the elevator muscles in eruption processes, and why understanding this key issue may help bring solutions to the challenge of anterior open bite treatment and stability.
Dr. Kiliaridis is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Geneva.
